BENEFITS OF EATING GRASS-FED
MEAT
Grass-Fed
meat is environmentally friendly. It is free of hormones,
antibiotics, animal by-products and irradiation and supplemented
with minerals, which ensures healthy cattle. Cows, sheep and other
grazers have the unique ability to convert grass into high quality
protein. They possess a rumen, a 45-gallon fermentation tank in
which beef is a bacteria
turns grass into organic acids and protein. The shift to a grain
diet can so
disturb the cow’s digestive process,
its rumen, in particular, that can kill the animal if not managed
carefully and accompanied by
aggressive antibiotics on a regular basis. Calves have no need for
regular medications while on grass, but as soon as they’re placed in
the back grounding pen, they’re apt to get sick, but the main
culprit is the feed.
Cows raised on grass simply take
longer to reach slaughter weight then cows raised on a richer diet,
and the modern meat industry has devoted itself to shortening a beef
calf’s allotted time.
What gets beef calf from 80-1,200
pounds in 14 months are enormous quantities of corn,
protein supplements and drugs, including growth hormones (synthetic
estrogen), which by the way, is banned in the European Union. Sixty
plus years ago steers were 4-5 years old at slaughter; twenty
plus years ago 2-3 years old, and now steer are slaughtered at 14-16
months old.
Cows raised on grass contain
conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a substance proven by science to
have numerous benefits in the human body. Such benefits as:
-
Reduces fat in people who are
overweight
-
Has cancer-fighting properties
-
Increases metabolic rate-this
would be a positive benefit for thyroid patients
-
Decreases abdominal fat-adrenal
imbalances and hormonal shifts are common in thyroid
patients, which frequently cause rapid accumulation of abdominal
fat
-
Enhances muscle growth
-
Lowers
cholesterol and triglycerides Combats arteriosclerosis
-
Lowers insulin resistance-
a risk
for some hypothyroid patients and lowering it can also help
prevent adult-onset diabetes and make it easier to control
weight
-
Reduces food-induced allergic
reactions
-
Enhances immune system
-
Full of beta-carotene
-
400% more of vitamin A&E
-
Virtually devoid of the risk
of mad cow disease
-
The human body cannot produce
CLA- the most abundant source is through grass-fed
beef and lamb.
